Understanding acute proctitis: causes, symptoms and treatment

Proctitis is a simple disease if you know what to watch out for. This is an acute inflammatory infection that affects the anus and rectum. Symptoms are rarely mild. Patients typically report anorectal pain, purulent or bloody discharge, and persistent constipation. The rectal mucosa is severely inflamed.

The most common cause is direct inoculation with pathogenic microorganisms. This usually happens during anal sex. But that’s not the only reason. STDs play an important role. The same applies to chronic inflammatory diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

“If the infection spreads outside the rectum into the sigmoid colon, it is called proctitis.”

Diagnosis is not always easy. Many people have multiple sexually transmitted infections at the same time. This makes diagnosis and treatment difficult. You can’t treat one pathogen alone when your body is fighting three other pathogens at the same time.

Treatment is covered. It all depends on the identified microbial cause. Cold sores can also cause fever and rectal ulcers. Treatment methods vary accordingly.

The inflammation can also spread. If it spreads from the rectum to the sigmoid colon, the condition is called proctitis. Symptoms get worse. Diarrhea occurs. Stomach cramps start. Fever becomes more common.

It is important to know the difference between proctitis and proctitis. One is localization. The other is progressive. Both require medical attention. Ignoring the symptoms rarely leads to a solution.
